In her book Why Can’t We Just Get Along? Shelly Hendrix outlines real life problems in her life as well as in the Bible when it comes to difficult people or conflicts with friends or family. I was really struck by the fact that the book concentrates on getting the reader emotionally and spiritually healthy instead of just giving the tools to deal with difficult situations. The premise being that more secure we are with ourselves and God’s love for us, the less likely we will be to take offense as well as to cause offenses to others. As the author states in chapter 2 “Hurt people hurt people” and so this is a first step toward ending the cycle of causing others pain.
Ms Hendrix’s conversational writing style makes Why Can’t We Just Get Along? an easy read that is simple to absorb and internalize. Guiding the reader through these concepts based upon scripture and prayer is also very appealing and necessary. The format of the book is also set up with questions for study and self-reflection that would be great for an individual or a group. Overall, I highly recommend Why Can’t We Just Get Along? for anyone seeking to grow in their Christian walk as a secure and considerate person loved by God, just as He calls us to be.
