The Ballet in Cinema series is a wonderful program that brings some of the best ballet companies in the world to select movie theaters all around the United States. This Thursday, February 20, 2014 the talented Royal Ballet comes to a theater near you in the classic ballet Swan Lake. Just think: you can witness The Royal Ballet\’s incredible spectacle without needing a plane ticket!
Tchaikovksy\’s legendary score paired with the choreography of Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov make Swan Lake one of the favorite classical ballets for audiences worldwide. For this reason most ballet companies have it as part of their repertory embracing both the complexities of the choreography (Lev Ivanov\’s intricate patterns, for one) and that of the characters themselves.
Swan Lake features Prince Siegfried (danced in this performance by Royal Ballet principal dancer Nehemiah Kish) and Odette who is Queen of the Swans by day and a princess by night. It is the tale of boy meets girl and then boy becomes enchanted by girl\’s devious doppelganger (Odile AKA The Black Swan). Traditionally, the same ballerina is cast as both Odette and Odile playing two incredibly opposite parts in the same performance: Odette, the dignified, regal (though often frightened) swan queen and Odlile who is alluring and somewhat dangerous.
All of the above make Swan Lake a must-see for all fans of the art form.
