5 Things: Old Books Edition

Happy Friday! Hope you all had a wonderful week getting accustomed to the time change or if not, at least making it to work/school on time. This week a friend and I were talking about books we were reading and I realized that while she likes the new bestsellers, I tend to gravitate toward \”old\” books. Here are some of my recent reads:

 1) Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day by Winifred Watson is one of my new favorites. If you enjoyed the film, it\’s definitely time to read the book. The nice thing is that they are both excellent for their own reasons and the film does not do a major disservice to Ms Watson\’s writing.

2) After reading her autobiography last year, my interest in Agatha Christie\’s writing was renewed. Destination Unknown by Agatha Christie was a genius find in a used bookstore and my favorite of her books thus far. I love that it was difficult to guess the ending!

3) The Inheritance by Louise May Alcott was not discovered until 1988 but I didn\’t hear about it until they had made it into a film in the 90\’s. Just a sweet story written by Alcott at age 17.

4) The Buccaneers by Edith Wharton is a great read although Wharton never actually finished the book. (An author named Marion Mainwaring completed the tale after Wharton\’s death) Excellently crafted characters!

5) I\’m a huge fan of Fred Astaire and so I had to pick up Daddy Long Legs by Jean Webster when I found out that the film was based on a book. A note: this book is now in the public domain and you can find a digital copy for free here.
