This screen shot is a poll borrowed from LinkedIn which has been keeping track of where most of the dance majors go to school, who they work for and what they specifically do as a job function. I thought it was very telling and would be a great resource for those of you seeking to major in dance. Of course, not every dancer in the USA is on LinkedIn but you get a good idea of what dance majors are doing these days.
Dance majors don\’t have a \”cookie cutter\” career path a lot of the time. Notice the number of people working for retail and fitness establishments or even those who sought to go freelance. Also notice that only 58 of the people polled are with a major dance company (Alvin Ailey).
I\’d be willing to bet that many of the people working for Starbucks or Target also teach at a studio or one of the fitness programs. As you probably know dance is not one of those industries you go into because you want to get rich. You dance because have to and it\’s your passion. Many times that means wearing several career hats during the day to upkeep your dance habit or payoff those student loans.
