Happy Friday and Happy Hanukkah!
\’Twas the week before Christmas and all through the snow, I realized I still had shopping to do and it was time to go. So, yes, I will be one of the many doing the mad-dash this weekend for final gift shopping. But in the mean time here are this week\’s \”5 Things\”:
1) Vox.com\’s \”7 surprising things everyone should know about Hanukkah\” was very enlightening. I\’m glad I haven\’t been spelling it wrong all these years because there are quite a few variations and all of them are correct. Whew! 🙂
2) Feeling a little nostalgic this time of the year I tried to find a recipe for the Sicilian fig cookies similar to the ones my grandmother would always make for Christmas. When the grandkids were old enough we\’d all join her for a big baking day and then take home tins of fig cookies. This recipe from Julia Child & Nick Malgieri is about as close as I could find to her version. The only amendments I would make is to leave out the almonds and rum while making the cookies into little \”loaves\” like these. They\’re a delicious family tradition.
3) Speaking of baking, this Monte Cristo Strata recipe from Betty Crocker looks like a great Christmas morning breakfast. I like that you can prep this one ahead of time (like the night before) and then stick it in the oven when you\’re ready.
4) In case you were wondering, Christmas lights are visible from space. I can\’t decide if that\’s a good thing or not but it does look cool.
5) And for my fellow Netflix subscribers, White Christmas is now available on instant play. (Along with a number of other goofy Christmas picks.) Even better, a few local theaters are showing the film for the Christmas season. Pretty neat!
