Book Review: Raising the Barre

Title: Raising the Barre
Author: Lauren Kessler (AKA Laurissa Kesslova)
Publisher: Da Capo
Release Date: November 24, 2015

Looking for a book to please the ballet lover or adult ballet student in your life? (Or even yourself?) I think they will really appreciate this new release by writer, adult ballet dancer, and Nutcracker aficionado Lauren Kessler.

What began as a tour to see the top The Nutcracker performances in the country, soon became a quest to relive Lauren\’s earlier dreams of performing. Thanks to sheer will and the game Eugene Ballet Company, Kessler trains to realize her visions of taking to the stage in the time-honored Christmas tradition.

I love that Lauren\’s amusing, conversational style also serves as a bit of a history lesson. Along the way she examines the origins of The Nutcracker and of ballet itself. Kessler also writes about some of the ballet greats (past and present) and the rigors of training. I know her travails and triumphs will serve as encouragement for adult dancers and a wonderful, page-turning read for all fans of ballet. Highly recommended!

Disclosure: This book was provided to me free of charge without expectation of a positive review.
