5 Things: How to behave edition

Happy Friday! Hope you all had a great week or at least enjoyed a dash of that stuff we call rain. Just a dash, mind you for those lovely summer flowers… no flooding!

We are loving the little bursts of rain here in the Duke City. You can see the clouds coming from miles away and even smell moisture in the air. Have you ever smelled rain in the desert? If not, I hope you get the chance to do so someday. There\’s nothing like it.

Although this week\’s \”5 Things\” are neither rain nor desert related, I think you\’ll find them pretty interesting. You can\’t go wrong with some chocolate and some good \”time killers\” on a Friday. Hope you enjoy!

1) Step back in time to 1943: How ought one to behave in this strange land called England as a member of the U.S. armed forces? There\’s an instructional video for that! (The beer isn\’t cold in England, by the way.) If you have more time, I also recommend the OSS instructional film if you have about an hour to spare. Kudos to whomever dug these up!

2) Here\’s another new podcast for your listening pleasure: Locked Up Abroad is mostly (so far) cautionary tales about drug running (or being friends with drug runners) but all told in an excellent style. I\’m hooked!

3) I have to give a huge shout-out to Smith\’s grocery store (maybe Kroger in your neck of the woods). Their new-ish ClickList service has been an incredible help this week. Wednesday was not a good day and the last thing I wanted to do was go grocery shopping after work. Well, I ordered my items from my smartphone and then picked them up on the way home. They didn\’t have a couple of the items I wanted so they replaced them with like kind products and matched the prices for me. I can see it being an exceptional help when someone is ill or just having a crummy day.

4) After reading the nutritional information on the back of my favorite dark chocolate spread (can I say \”yikes!?\”) it was time to look for an alternative. Why not a homemade version? In lieu of \”real\” butter and sugar, I did use butter substitute and Splenda and it turned out pretty amazing. Highly recommend. (Tip: Try it on warm, whole wheat naan… yum!)

5) And in case you were wondering how your daily steps match up with the rest of the world, the BBC figured it out for you. Surprisingly, the US is about \”middle of the road\” lazy but you can see a definite correlation between places where walking is pretty much compulsory and more steps during the day. Well, now that we\’ve seen the instructional video, maybe we can move to England and fit in, walking everywhere.

Okay, that\’s all for now. Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!
