Today, I wanted to share with you a beautiful passage from Charles Dickens\’ The Seven Poor Travellers. First published in a serial format in 1854, the short work is centered around dinner at a charitable hostel. six travellers seek refuge here on Christmas Eve as the narrator (the seventh traveller) shares an inspirational tale.
The passage from Chapter 3, below, is taken from the end of the narrative as the seventh man takes to the hostel\’s grounds. The beautiful Dickensian turn of phrase can also serve as a meditation on the reason why we celebrate Christmas:
