5 Things: Tolkien Rice Guy Edition

Happy Friday! Hope that you all had a great week like the scientists from the University of Michigan who successfully shrunk liver tumors with sound waves. No doubt they are enjoying a major sense of accomplishment right now and could help many people in the future.

Well, even if your greatest accomplishment this week was actually getting dressed to go to work in your home office, it is Friday, my friends! And you know that means that you’re in for another “5 Things” to celebrate. Enjoy!

You need a little from the drama of the week (war, inflation, celebrity court cases…). Look no further than a baby goat “ballet!”

Fellow Lord of the Rings geeks will appreciate listening to the actual voice of J.R.R. Tolkien! With such quality literature, it’s easy to forget that Tolkien died in 1973 and not a century earlier. It’s wonderful that they were able to keep such recordings!

A bizarre account from Elle magazine recently brought to light a story from the UK that seems stranger than anything a fiction writer could dream up. Between 1987 and 2010, some women involved in activist groups were unknowingly targeted by undercover policemen for romantic relationships. Even now the rationale for this “operation” seems hazy (not to mention cruel) but the article is a great read.

If you’re not familiar with Nigel Ng (known to my family as “Uncle Roger”), here’s a good introduction from NPR. Ng went full-time in his comedy career just before COVID hit and had to be a little creative in how he interacted with his audience. His character “Uncle Roger” throws some serious shade on “creative” Asian cooking recipes from celebrity chefs like Jamie Oliver and his beloved Nigella Lawson.

And, while we’re still waiting for a handheld medical scanning device, the scientists at NASA have managed to “holoport” a doctor onto the International Space Station. Finally, some real Star Trek-level science!

Okay, that’s all for now. Have a wonderful weekend, everyone, and remember to pray for Ukraine!
